Who Has The Balls To Be the MLA Datapoint for the MasterCard Gold Luxury Card By Barclay?

Banks are afraid to charge service members more than a $100 annual fee per the Military Lending Act on any consumer credit card product per my armchair analysis of the MLA.

I am currently being charged the $75 from BoA for their Alaska Product, but when I opened it in November of 2017 the annual fee was waived citing the MLA. They have since actually read the MLA and determined that a sub $100 fee is a bonafide fee, and started to charge for it again. On the flip-side Citi has decided to waive their $450 on their American Airlines Executive as well as their $495 fee on their Prestige card. Chase has followed suit and waived $450 for their United Club card, $450 on Chase Sapphire Preferred, and even the $450 on their Ritz-Carlton Card citing the MLA.

I believe this $100 threshold cited in the FDIC documents is prompting all of this. I have not found anyone that has the Cojones to try for the $995 Barclay’s gold card that we enjoyed back in 2016. NOw that the MLA has taken place, they would have to justify a $995 annual fee as being a bonafide fee.

What makes the experiment more risky is the lack of 50,000 points as a sign up bonus (Worth $1,000 in travel in th epast). However there is a $200 travel credit you can get at least $400 back if the whole thing does not work out if you straddle two years (Hit in July and then in January, then cancel).

Maybe we need to create a churning defense fund for this type of thing. Make it part of the CFC so that you can make tax deductible contributions. Please if you are up for going for it, post your data points here!

Been there… Done that. Got it waived initially like 3 yrs ago then they came back and told me that I would need to start paying the 1k annual fee. I then proceeded to max it out via cash withdrawal. It was a sweet 25k 0% interest loan now paying 1% monthly.

Long time lurker. Wanted to chime in since I have been eagerly waiting for Barclay to get on board with MLA waiver like AMEX/CHASE/CITI. I had the Luxury card when it launched and closed when they were doing away with SCRA benefits for post-military service. I have made dozens of phone calls with no luck. See the link below for more insight from Barclay Cardmember Agreement (Military Lending Protection section). Barclay would state the line that says “any participation fee charged (other than certain participation fees for a credit card account)” to justify the $995 fee. If anyone has any luck I would be interested in knowing.

Awesome! Thank you so much for sharing, were you able to get the bonuses for both the prestige and the premier?

      • ChurningCents2011 says:

Yes, received bonuses on both Prestige and Premiere.

        • uiucderp2011 says:

So am I wrong about the language about getting the bonus only once per 24 months per product? Since Prestige and Premier are both the same product family, wont I hae to get the bonuses at the same time?

            Series of events:
            1) Applied for Prestige early March.
            a) Met $4k spend a few days later
            2) Applied for Premier >8 days later.
            a) Met $4k spend a few days later
            3) When charges posted on both cards, paid off balance towards the end of March.
            4) Points posted in both accounts at varying times.

Interesting DP. Do you think you got both bonuses because Citi is not enforcing their own rules (and therefore making mailers useless) or because you applied for the Premier before you actually got the bonus on the Prestige?

T&C: “Bonus ThankYou® Points are not available if you received a new cardmember bonus for Citi Rewards+SM, Citi ThankYou® Preferred, Citi ThankYou® Premier/Citi PremierSM or Citi Prestige®, or if you have closed any of these cards, in the past 24 months.”

What do you do to meet minimum spend that quickly?

Called Barlcay last night, the representative I spoke with said she could not find anything in the Barclay SCRA and MLA that waived annual fee for current Active Duty, just those that had the card prior to reporting for Active Duty.

  5. James says:

Why not start with the AA Silver card? If someone uses AA quite a bit for travel on orders that $25 a day food credit would offset the $195 fee quickly. I would pick it up if I was in a billet that I had to travel frequently just for that credit.

  6. Michael Vazana says:

So apparently they only deny scra and mla on the gold card. My 03 buddy has the black card and he says the annual fee is waived and he def got it after he joined the military. I personally wouldn’t even waste my time with the black card though.

    • uiucderp2011 says:

Excellent datapoint! This means we can get the AA aviator red and upgrade to silver for a $25 daily inflight bennifit!
