If you don’t have enough time to make enough flights or segments or spend for 2016 due to upcoming deployment or being overseas, you can send United a quick note and orders to extend status. I contacted Customer Service when I moved back to the states and explained my situation. I got this in response:
We’re always glad to hear from Premier Silver members like you. Thanks for writing.
Thank you for your service. We do extend Premier status by one year for deployed military personnel, U.S. National Guard troops and military reservists called to active duty. To qualify, please fax a copy of your notice of activation, mobilization or deployment, to: 872-825-0197 or upload your document to http://united.com/ContactMP . Please write “Attention: Military Extension” on the fax and include your MileagePlus account number. Once we’ve received your information, we’ll process your Premier status.
Thanks for your loyalty.

When I was in Okinawa they waived my PQD requirement to make status due to my APO/FPO address. I made status on ANA Experience Japan flights, but when I moved back the USPS quickly switched my address and let United know. This was a bummer because I was now required me to make PQD spend of $3,000. I sent my orders and explained I had spent all my time overseas for 2016 and they extended my status till January 2018!
Here are the breakdowns for status, not likely to ever have status for myself again!
