Okinawa Staycation with Points

This post goes out to all my brothers and sisters trapped on base. I have a colleague that is planning on hosting his parents in a few weeks and we were looking at the many hotel options on this humble island. After years working on base, living in the BOQ or the “towers” you some times forget that Okinawa is home to some pretty heavy hitting hotel chains. For example there is a tier 4 Ritz Carlton in Nago, There is the brand new Hilton resort by American Village. There is even the Busena Terrace, a $5,700 a night hotel where Bill Clinton stayed with his 7 counterparts; Italian Prime Minister Giuliano Amato, British Prime Minister Tony Blair, Russian President Vladimir Putin, U.S. President Bill Clinton, Japanese Prime Minister Yoshiro Mori, French President Jacques Chirac, Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chretien, German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder and European Commission President Romano Prodi during the 2000 g8 summit in Nago:

They love Clinton so much the replicated his boyhood home on a Golf Course in Nago! If you get the base fever and want some off base time, I’ve summed up all of the major point based hotel chains in Okinawa.

So right now the wife and I are planning a mid week staycation at the Ritz Nago, during the down season they have many rooms at around $300, but they also have these amazing all inclusive dining and spa packages:

ritz stay jjj

I looked into using Marriott/Ritz Carlton Reward points and it was pretty pitiful redemption at these rates, even at their other two properties:

$ a night Points $ per   pt
Renaissance Okinawa Resort $177 30,000 0.0059
The Ritz-Carlton, Okinawa $316 60,000 0.0053
Okinawa Marriott Resort & Spa $113 35,000 0.0032

so I decided to get the dining experience package for included dinner and breakfast for $525. This will result in 2,625 points for Marriott/RC for my next stay when i charge it on my Chase Ritz Carlton Rewards Card. I will also get an upgrade in room and late checkout with the included gold elite status with the card.

hilton honors

In terms of Hilton we have some good choices, and for a limited time they are offering 2010 points for every 1000 Amex Membership Reward point! So my sign up of both AmEx Platinum cards for $6,000 spend will net 90k MR points resulting in 180,900 HHonors points!

$ a night Points $ per   pt
Hilton Okinawa Chatan Resort $166 50,000 0.0033
DoubleTree by Hilton Naha $101 30,000 0.0034

So by getting both platinum cards, applying for the $925 annual fee waiver will get you 6 nights at the Double Tree or almost 4 nights at the brand new Chatan Hilton! The AmEx Plat will also give you gold status for HHonors. For Hilton and Double Tree it gives you free wifi, room upgrade and a continental breakfast.

Again, not a good use of points unless you are just dying to dup all of your amex points at less than a third of a cents per point. When adjusted for the conversion of 1:2.01 we are just seeing 3/5 of a cent per MR point, you rather take the 1% cash-back and book the hotel with that.

$ a night Points $ per   pt
Renaissance Okinawa Resort $177 30,000 0.0059
The Ritz-Carlton, Okinawa $316 60,000 0.0053
Okinawa Marriott Resort & Spa $113 35,000 0.0032
Hilton Okinawa Chatan Resort $166 50,000 0.0033
DoubleTree by Hilton Naha $101 30,000 0.0034
Hyatt Regency Naha, Okinawa $205 12,000 0.0171

So my go to favorite is Hyatt, and you can see here you get an impressive 1.7 cents per point, better than Ritz, Marriott and Hilton! With Hyatt you get a room upgrade and free wifi with your Hyatt Gold Passport Platinum level with the Chase Hyatt Card. Then I can also sump ultimate reward points from my Chase Ink and Chase Sapphire.

The last big hotel group that I am a member of is SPG which has their Sheraton Okinawa Sunmarina Resort opening June 1, 2016. So might be my PCS out hotel, who knows! The other group is IHG which has 2 locations on island:

InterContinental ANA Manza Beach Resort $227 50,000 0.0045
Crowne Plaza ANA Okinawa Harborview $124 20,000 0.0062

So to sum it up, Hyatt wins every time to use points for booking, even in Okinawa. So if your tired of your BOQ or have guests coming to visit, here are your choices for points:

$ a night Points $ per   pt
Renaissance Okinawa Resort $177 30,000 0.0059
The Ritz-Carlton, Okinawa $316 60,000 0.0053
Okinawa Marriott Resort & Spa $113 35,000 0.0032
Hilton Okinawa Chatan Resort $166 50,000 0.0033
DoubleTree by Hilton Naha $101 30,000 0.0034
Hyatt Regency Naha, Okinawa $205 12,000 0.0171
InterContinental ANA Manza Beach Resort $227 50,000 0.0045
Crowne Plaza ANA Okinawa Harborview $124 20,000 0.0062
